The Space Between

Based in Effingham in the heart of Surrey, The Space Between is a hub for young people and families where learning, connection and opportunity come together. We offer personalised 1:1 and small-group tuition for children aged 7–16, alongside a broad programme of enrichment, specialist experiences and support. Our flexible approach allows us to work alongside schools, complement home education, and provide learning beyond traditional school settings.

Some of our children are navigating anxiety, neurodiversity and overwhelm, where learning and play have become too closely associated with stress and demand. We offer a space to build confidence, feel understood, and discover curiosity. Whatever the starting point, we meet each young person where they are, and help them find their footing before choosing their next steps.

Alternative Provision

What is alternative provision?

Alternative provision describes educational and enrichment opportunities which exist beyond traditional educational settings. Programmes may complement learning in school, form part of a reduced timetable, provide specialist support alongside an existing placement, or offer bespoke educational experiences tailored to individual needs and aspirations.

Is The Space Between right for my child?

We welcome all children and young people, whether they are on roll at a mainstream or specialist school, accessing other alternative provisions, are home educated, or currently without a suitable educational placement.

Places can be funded through schools, local authorities, EHCPs, personal budgets, or private arrangements, with or without a professional referral.

Curriculum and approach

  • At The Space Between, our approach is to prioritise emotional safety: we slow things down, take time to understand the whole picture, and work with the child, family and school to create the right conditions for connection, regulation and stability.

    From this foundation, we support re-engagement through carefully structured experiences that build self-esteem, confidence, independence, and a renewed sense of capability.

  • Once the foundations of connection and understanding have been established, we take a flexible and responsive approach to learning. Every child arrives with different strengths, needs, interests, and aspirations, so no two programmes are exactly the same.

    Rather than relying solely on fixed, linear pathways, we work with children, families, schools, and professionals to create personalised learning experiences that build confidence, develop skills, and keep future opportunities open.

  • There is no single pathway to success. We therefore take a flexible approach to assessment and accreditation, ensuring that each learner can work towards outcomes that are meaningful, recognised, and appropriate for their future goals.

    Some children may work towards formal qualifications such as GCSEs or Functional Skills, while others may benefit from alternative accreditation, portfolio-based evidence, or personalised targets that reflect their individual journey.

    We also recognise that growth and development extend beyond academic learning. Alongside academic outcomes, we track progress across four key areas: emotional regulation; social interactions and relationships; engagement and learning behaviours; and safety, independence, and confidence.

    Together, these areas help us understand each child's strengths, celebrate their achievements, and identify meaningful next steps in their learning and development.

  • While child-led learning sits at the heart of what we do, we remain mindful of keeping future pathways open. For some children, this may include reintegration into school settings; for others, it may involve working towards formal qualifications or alternative long-term destinations.

    Our provision is therefore grounded in the National Curriculum, ensuring that flexibility and creativity sit alongside academic purpose and future opportunity.

    When preparing these programmes of study, curiosity provides a powerful starting point. We look for opportunities to build on a child's existing interests and use them as gateways into wider knowledge and skills.

    A fascination with Pokémon might lead to curriculum activities such as reading, writing, statistics, classification, or strategy. An interest in trains could open up opportunities to explore engineering, geography, history, timetables, and mathematical problem-solving. By starting with what matters to the learner, we can create meaningful connections that increase engagement and confidence.

    Alongside individual interests, we create opportunities for learning through projects, investigations, outdoor experiences, enterprise activities, and real-world challenges.

    Across all areas of learning, our aim is to make knowledge purposeful, relevant, and connected to the wider world.

Delivery

  • When children are at their most vulnerable, a trusted relationship with a consistent adult can make a profound difference. 1:1 tuition provides a space in which children can feel safe, understood, and supported, creating the foundations from which confidence, engagement, and learning can grow.

    Our 1:1 tuition sessions provide a calm, personalised learning experience tailored to each young person's needs, strengths, interests, and long-term goals.

    Tuition is delivered by experienced teachers and SEN practitioners who understand the importance of relationships, flexibility, and emotional safety alongside academic progress. Sessions may focus on rebuilding confidence, closing gaps in learning, supporting examination courses, or helping a young person rediscover a sense of success in learning.

    Teaching takes place within our carefully adapted learning environments; within pupils' own homes; or in other agreed community settings.

    1:1 tuition can also form part of a wider bespoke timetable, sitting alongside small-group learning, mentoring, therapeutic input, enrichment activities, or online learning opportunities.

  • For many children and young people, small-group learning provides an important stepping stone between 1:1 support and the wider world. It offers opportunities to develop confidence, communication, collaboration, and independence within a safe and carefully supported environment.

    Groups are kept intentionally small, typically involving between two and four learners, and are thoughtfully matched according to age, interests, needs, and learning goals. This enables young people to feel safe enough to contribute, collaborate, and learn from one another while developing increasing independence and confidence.

    Small-group learning may focus on academic subjects, life skills, special interests, project-based learning, or enrichment activities, depending on the needs and aspirations of the learners involved.

  • We believe that creativity, curiosity, and joy are essential parts of learning - not extras to be added once a child is coping, but powerful routes back into confidence, connection, and engagement.

    Creativity and enrichment therefore form an important part of the learning experience at The Space Between. Alongside academic learning, young people are encouraged to explore interests, discover new hobbies, and develop confidence through meaningful, hands-on experiences.

    Programmes may include creative arts, cooking, outdoor learning, gaming and strategy activities, construction projects, storytelling, technology, sport, and community-based experiences.

    Sessions are designed to support communication, teamwork, problem solving, resilience, and self-esteem, while providing opportunities for children to experience success, connection, and enjoyment in a safe and supportive environment.

  • All children who learn with us have regular opportunities to engage in formal and in informal outdoor learning.

    Whether this is simply taking our books outside; making use of the beautiful recreational facilities at our site for play and exploration; engaging in gardening activities to grow our own produce; or taking lessons with our fully qualified Forest School practitioner, all children have the opportunity to connect regularly and meaningfully with the outdoor world around them.

  • Our specialist mentoring offers consistent, trusted support from experienced practitioners who understand the challenges many children and young people face. Whether building confidence, developing independence, navigating school, or working towards personal goals, mentoring provides a safe relationship where children feel understood, encouraged and empowered to take positive steps.
